Wreck follows fatal shooting

A Marion man died Monday morning after a crash west of Strong City that authorities say followed a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Emergency crews were called at 6:25 a.m. to Middle Creek Rd. near Elmdale for a report of a single-vehicle crash. The vehicle was on fire, according to the Chase County sheriff’s office.

The driver and sole occupant was identified as 20-year-old Samuel McIntosh. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

McIntosh died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the crash likely occurred immediately after the firearm was discharged, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office initially requested assistance from Kansas Highway Patrol and later from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the state fire marshal’s office.

LifeSave Air Medical from Emporia also was dispatched.

The case remains under investigation.
