Warriors teams place 8th at Centre tournament

Staff writer

Peabody-Burns Warriors basketball teams both placed eighth at the Centre Cougar Classic basketball tournament, which took place Friday, Saturday, and Monday.

After losing to both the Wakefield Bombers 38-18 on Friday, and the Solomon Gorillas 46-40 on Saturday, the Lady Warriors turned up the heat on Monday’s game, trailing the Rural Vista Heat by just 4 points at half time.

However, the Heat pulled away in the second half, and the Warriors lost 51-44.

Coach Scott Bauer said that he saw many things in the tournament that the team will take with them for the last half of the season.

“Defensively, I am loving what I am seeing,” Bauer said. “We give ourselves a chance each game. It’s just a matter of getting the ball into the hoop.”

Peabody-Burns boys basketball also faced three loses, losing first to Sacred Heart Knights 80-12, then to Rural Vista Heat 61-36.

The boys played Centre for seventh place, and lost 60 to 31.

Coach Caleb Good said the Warriors were outmatched against Sacred Heart, who are ranked second in 2A, but still felt they had some good moments during the game against the Heat.

“We had a great quarter in first the half [of the Rural Vista Game],” Good said, “but just kind of had a couple of breakdowns where they had runs and we weren’t able to recover from it.”
