The Warriors have battled their way to the best win-loss record in their league and have their eye on an even bigger prize.

At 16-2 for the season as of press time, Marion High is top seed in Class 2-1A softball heading into regional competition next week.

The Warriors grabbed 3-2 and 9-7 victories in their double-header at home Friday against the Wildcats. The team was in Remington against the Broncos at press time.

Marion is a strong offensive team this year, coach Judy Noller said, with several heavy hitters among its upper classmen.

“If we can get our bats going we can compete with plenty of teams,” Noller said.

Waner and freshman Natalie Sigel have been consistent on the on the pitcher’s mound.

Sigel grounded Canton-Galva April 13, by throwing a complete game shutout against the Eagles, allowing only one hit and zero runs over four innings, striking out five and walking zero.

“They have consistently thrown good games,” Noller said. “They haven’t been wild, they have been keeping the ball right around the strike zone.”

Almost all on the team’s roster have carved out a moment to call their own this season, she said.

They love softball and want to give their best, particularly, her seniors have played to win during their last season at Marion.

“They have been the core of the team,” she said. “They have played together since they were little and it’s great that they get to have the last season.”

All of her teams have played to win, but this season’s Warriors seem particularly goal oriented, she said.

“They might be a little more hard-headed in wanting to do it, I don’t know,” she said. “But they are driven. They are driven to be successful.”
