Former barber W.R. “Bill” Holdeman, 91, Marion, died Oct. 20 at home.

He was born Dec. 23, 1923, to Joseph and Esther (Luginbill) Holdeman at Rich Hill, Missouri. He attended Halstead schools. He served with the Marine Corps during World War II, and received a Purple Heart for wounds incurred during combat.

He was married to Marcheta Walters in November 1963, and later married Feebie Woodrum Smith in November 1982.

He operated Holdeman’s Barber Shop, and belonged to the American Legion and VFW. He was a city commissioner in Newton and Marion, and served as Newton mayor.

He is survived by his wife, Feebie, of Marion; daughter, Kathee Vaught of El Dorado; stepchildren, Nathan Smith of Joplin, Missouri, Valerie Duerksen of Hillsboro, Brenda Smith of Marion, and Cerece Lawson of Burlington; brothers, Chuck Holdeman of Goddard, and Kenny Holdeman of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were Friday at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion. Interment with military rites was in Marion Cemetery.

Memorial funds have been established for Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center, Wichita, and Good Shepherd Hospice.
