Volleyball team more "seasoned" this season

Staff writer

With 17 girls out for volleyball this season, Coach Sheena Gann is not as nervous for her second year coaching as she was her first.

“I feel pretty confident,” Gann said. “I’m excited to see the season come together. We’re a bit more of a seasoned team this year.”

The Lady Warriors lost just one player from last year’s roster, Katy Benson.

Since losing Benson, Gann has been focused on teaching the team more about hitting.

“Katy Benson was our strong hitter last year, so we’ve had to adjust our hitters,” Gann said. “We’ve got some really hard hitting teams in our league, so I think a good defense is something we need to have.”

The team has four seniors this year: Anna Lubbers, Mallory Harris, Ragean Schreiber, and Tori Pickens.

The team started practicing Aug. 15, and had their first tournament of the season Saturday.

Senior Samantha Frye also will be returning to the game after an injury left her on the bench.

“(She) got a lot of varsity time last year, but at the very beginning, she had an ankle injury,” Gann said.

Gann is excited to have Frye back on the team.

“She’s doing great,” Gann said. “I’ve got confidence in her. I wish I could have used her more last year, but I didn’t have an option.”

Frye’s younger sister, Lindsey, is also on the team.

“Lindsey is a freshman and she’s got amazing control,” Gann said.

Gann wants the team to work, but to also have fun.

“I hope that we can be competitive and have fun, of course,” Gann said, “but also work hard and get some wins. We’re definitely capable of it.”
