IN MEMORIAM:   Velma Thornton

Velma Louise (Humphries) Thornton, 71, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at home in Leon, Kansas, with her family surrounding her.

She was born in McPherson, Kansas to Christopher W. Humphries and Minnie Myrtle (Fritts) Humphries. In Florence, Kansas at the Florence Christian Church on August 7, 1964, she married the love of her life, Gary Thornton.

She definitely had a servant’s heart and loved being a CNA, serving and taking care of others. She retired from the Andover Court Assisted Living Home. Along with her love for nursing, she enjoyed gardening and any family activities. Velma’s great love for her family will always be a great part of their hearts and lives.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Gary Thornton, Sr; Cynthia (Rodney) Fiedler of Newton, Gary (Michelle) Thornton Jr. of Wichita, and Christina Thornton of Leon; grandchildren Crystal Thornton (Adam Savage), Gage Thornton and Lacie (James) Penhorwood; great-granddaughter Eleanor Annalouise Savage; sisters Patty (Lawrence) Jury of Peabody and Terry (Richard) Winters of Arkansas City; sisters-in-law Sheryl (Brock) Baker of Peabody and Lynette (Charles) Windsor of Cypress, Texas; many nephews, nieces, other family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Edwin Earl Humphries, Wallace Christopher Humphries, Jr., Burton Dwight Humphries, Elmer Leon Humphries, and Charles Woodrow Humphries, sisters Donna Lorene Shull, and Myrna Kay Porter, and sister-in-law Frances Donella Lais.

Services will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, June 17, 2016 at Leon United Methodist Church, 202 N. Olive, Leon, Kansas.

Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 18, at Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, Kansas. Baker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be left for the family at www.bakerfhvc.com
