HILLSBORO:   Trojans fighting for spot at top in volleyball

Trojans seek third straight trip to state tournament

Staff writer

Volleyball is tradition in Hillsboro, which won its first state title in 1987.

After a five-year lull, Hillsboro returned to the state tournament the past two years with a goal of a three-peat this year.

Many starters return from last season’s state runner-up squad.

Returning letter-winners and starters include Kori Arnold, Zaylee Werth, Savannah Shahan, Ella Suderman, D’Myia Cox, Kirsten Kluver, Anslee Brewer, Keeley Brewer, and Makenna Reed.

Hillsboro also has several newcomers who saw significant time on the varsity floor or practiced every day.

Hillsboro finished with a perfect league record in 2021 league — 9-0.

“We are focusing on our areas that need improvement from the beginning,” coach Sandy Arnold said. “Once again, we have high expectations for post-season play. This will also require strong serving from each position and consistency in our passing game. Each weeknight match and each tournament are steps toward a higher goal.”

The team already has started off strong this year, beating Halstead, Lyons, Hesston, Haven, and Pratt, and Haven, each in two sets, then Smoky Valley, 2-1, Aug. 27.

After facing 4-0 Cheney at a tri Tuesday with Hesston, the Trojans will be busy with tournament play Saturday then face Nickerson on Monday and repeat matches Tuesday against Lyons and Smoky Valley.

“Not trying to look too far ahead though, many of the girls have set their goals high and that includes making a return trip to the state tournament to take care of some unfinished business,” Arnold said.
