Hillsboro volleyball player came so close to the dream of a state title, their disappointment still stings.

Soaring after a 25-11 win over Inman in substate, the Trojans finished fourth at state championships in El Dorado. The girls beat Wabaunasee in pool play but lost in rematch 28-7.

“We hold high expectations in our program,” coach Sandy Arnold said. “We did not end last season on a very good note, and it has left a bad taste for our returners. On that note, we would like to have a stronger finish to this season.”

Arnold admits the league is competitive but she thinks the Trojans can finish in the top three in league play against solid teams like Nickerson and Smoky Valley.

Three returners from last year’s team bring championship experience and hunger to win to the table.

Senior Sammie Saunders, and junior Kori Arnold, both of whom were Central Kansas League second team honorees, will provide leadership along with sophomore Zaylee Werth.

Saunders also was a member of the 2A state volleyball all-tournament team and an honorable mention in Class 2A.

The team’s setter, junior Ella Suderman, gained varsity experience this past season, and Arnold expects great things from her.

The Trojans’ underclassmen are gaining skills and confidence.

Sophomore Savannah Shahan has adjusted to the pace of varsity volleyball during practice.

“She is a very strong player and will bring a strong presence to the front row,” Arnold said. 

Junior D’Myia Cox and sophomore Anslee Brewer have filled key slots and are building confidence with each practice and match.

Hillsboro’s next meet is set Saturday at SE of Saline.
