Students build upon memorial

Marion High School’s memorial sign for Class of 1971 student Randy Razor, who died in a traffic accident shortly before commencement, has gone unused since the school district installed an electric sign nearby.
The Advanced Materials Technology class gave it a facelift last week with four plaques featuring school mascots and initials done with a laser and router.
Mark Lockhart, their teacher, said superintendent Aaron Homberg had approached him about doing something for the sign last year. He gave the task to his students.
“Their imagination’s the limit,” he said. “I work on it when I can, but a lot of it I just hand over to the kids and say, ‘do what it needs.’”
The completed sign sat in a finishing room over the summer. Lockhart rounded up his construction class to install it Friday.
“We had to do a little improvising to get it to stay in,” he said. “I’ve been told the people who donated the sign appreciate it being put back into use.”
There are no initials or other recognition for the students who created the sign.
