The Bluebirds’ Scholars Bowl team earned a spot in the state tournament after a suspenseful afternoon at aregional meet.

Goessel finished pool play with a 5-1 record, vaulting into the championship round with five other teams. The top three teams at regionals will advance to a state meet Saturday.

In the championship round, Goessel won two matches, but lost three times.

Wichita Central Christian Academy and Little River has secured first and second places, but there was a three-way tie for the third and final spot.

Judges reviewed the margin of victory by the three tied teams, and Goessel was named the winner of third place.

The Bluebird team consists of Braxton Unruh, Eli Boden, Colby Nafziger, Jack Nickel, Viola Schmidt and Rebecca Impson. Goessel will compete in the Class 1A, Division I at Frankfort.
