Poker run hits a new pace

Staff writer

Peabody American Legion Auxiliary is offering a new twist to a long-standing form of entertainment on the vehicle cruise circuit.

The group will sponsor a Walking Poker Run on Sunday when Peabody is host to the final cruise for 2015. Poker Runs have long been a popular addition to gatherings of folks on motorcycles or in vintage cars.

Poker Run participants follow a given route, stop at designated destinations, and pick up a playing card. When they reach their final stop, the driver with the top hand wins a prize.

To encourage Peabody Cruise participants to visit local businesses, Legion Auxiliary members have changed the event to a Walking Poker Run among downtown businesses. A $1 donation will get walkers started. Cards will be available at Peabody Market, Flint Hills Gypsies, Pop’s Diner, and Main Street Beautique.

Players will return their playing sheet to Peabody American Legion and draw their final card. Twenty dollars in Peabody Bucks will be mailed to the winner.

Players must be 18 or older to take part. Money raised will go toward community service projects.
