Peabody-Burns takes on
1A sub-state tournament

Staff writer

Class 1A substate basketball comes to Peabody this week as Peabody-Burns Junior Senior High plays host for one of eight Division 1 tournaments.

Athletic director Tyson Kendricks said they are expecting five schools in the tournament, each bringing both their boys and girls teams.

“It has taken a lot of organization and communication with all the teams,” Kendricks said.  “A lot of communicating about things like bus parking, where the players will enter and exit, and pass lists.”

Kendricks, who is in his second year as athletic director, said there will be a concession stand offered, as well as a hospitality room for administration and coaches.

The tournament isn’t designed to produce much of a profit directly for the school, but they do receive enough to cover expenses for officials and workers required to run the tournament.

Senior night for the Warriors was planned for Fri., but cancelled due to inclement weather. Seniors and their parents will be acknowledged after both games on Tuesday night.

“Technically, as hosts, we’re supposed to create as much of a neutral site as possible, so we’re waiting until all the games are over,” Kendricks said

The 1A sub-state tournament began Tuesday where Peabody-Burns girls played Flinthills and the boys played Chase County.

If the Peabody-Burns boys win Tuesday, they will play Centre at 6 p.m. Thursday. If the girls win they will face off against Rural Vista at 6 p.m. Fri.

Championship games are at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, girls playing first.

“I’m looking forward to getting a good turnout and supporting our Warrior basketball teams,” said Kendricks. “Hopefully we have a great tournament.”
