Marion leads with record delinquencies
Staff writer
With overdue payments from City of Marion taxpayers leading the way, 2025 property tax delinquencies in Marion County set yet another record, according to a notice being published in this week’s newspaper.
Countywide, a record 620 parcels owe a record $576,070.60 in 2025 taxes. That’s up 1.2% from last year.
Nearly a quarter of the delinquencies come from Marion, where $133,750.31, up 27.4%, remains unpaid on 100 properties. This is the second year in a row for Marion to top the list of delinquencies.
Peabody has the largest number of delinquent properties, 120, on which $97,726.10, up 19.0%, remains unpaid.
Despite being the county’s largest city, Hillsboro has a much lower delinquent total — $50,514.61, down 47.3%, on 49 properties.
Much smaller Florence is close behind with $43,737.97, down 5.8%, owed on 75 properties.
For comparison, tax rates from all taxing units combined in those cities were 225.282 mills in Peabody, 213.097 mills in Florence, 206.175 mills in Marion, and 171.872 mills in Hillsboro.
Unincorporated areas of the county account for 45.6% of total 2025 delinquencies — $180,533.14, up 6.1%, on 163 parcels.

Impact of delinquencies
Many names appear on the delinquency list nearly every year, but some appear only occasionally and do not necessarily indicate that they are deadbeats.
Deaths and bankruptcies in addition to simple oversights often explain delinquencies.
Still, not paying taxes on time affects other taxpayers in the county.
The total for delinquent 2025 property taxes is equivalent to a countywide tax rate of more than 3 mills, or more than $34.50 added onto the tax bill of the owner of a typical home valued at $100,000.
Delinquent taxpayers don’t get off scot free. Not only are their required to pay back taxes; they also must pay interest of 13% to 15% along with the cost of printing their delinquency in the paper.
