Marion 1st, Goessel 2nd at Warrior cross-country

Marion’s boys cross country won their Warrior Invitational this past week.

Gavin Wasmuth finished first at the Big M Ranch with at time of 18 minutes, 27 seconds, Luke Wessel was second at 18 minutes, 37 seconds and Christopher Berry was placed fourth at 18 minutes, 50 seconds.

Heidi Grimmett grabbed a fourth-place finish for the girls team at 21 minutes, 42 seconds.

“We had a great afternoon on the Big M Ranch, and it was fun to watch,” coach Grant Thierolf said. “Out top four boys went out, attacked the race early, and competed against themselves and the course.”

Wasmuth shaved a minute off is time from last year and Wessel also continues to improve, Thierolf said.

“Christopher Beery was right behind Luke, pushing hard to a fourth place finish, and Tristen Dye was closing at the end to finish seventh,” he said. “A fantastic job by the lead pack of runners.”

Heidi Grimmett ran her best race in two years to finish fourth, he said.

Marion will compete at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Halstead.

Goessel

Goessel cross country improved race times on Thursday at the at the Warrior Invitational this past Thursday as its boys team finished second.

“The Marion course has long, straight runs with minimal corners, which helps lower our times,” coach Brian Lightner said.

“Ben Olson set a personal record with a third-place finish and a time of 18 minutes, 41 seconds.

Jacob Schrag and Timothy Schrag finished ninth and 10th respectively. Joey Lapp and Javin Schmidt came in 25th and 27th.

Cheyenne Sawyer and Eider Basoa earned medals in the girls varsity race.

Goessel will race Thursday at Harvey County East Park.

Other teams

Hillsboro will race Thursday at Berean Academy. Centre will race Thursday in Halstead.
