Leashed dog attacks teen; owner cited

Staff writer

A dog owner was ticketed Friday after her border collie, being walked on a leash by a young family member, attacked a teenage pedestrian in the 200 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion.

The victim was treated at St. Luke Hospital for leg and arm wounds after being bitten shortly after noon. Police described the wounds as broken skin, not requiring stitches.

The dog reportedly was up to date with vaccinations and was not taken to a veterinarian but was quarantined by the owner.

Assistant police chief Steven Janzen said the dog was being walked on a leash by a child between the sidewalk and the street when it pulled the child toward the teenage victim.

Dog owner Samantha Turk, whose home is in that block, was ticketed, Janzen said, so a municipal court judge could determine whether it was safe for the dog to remain in town.
