John Backhus

John H. Backhus, 86, died Nov. 29 at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Herington. Burial will follow at the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, North Tampa, and a prayer service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.

He was born in Tampa Feb. 2, 1929 to John G. and Helena Backhus.

He was a farmer, stockman, and member of Our Redeemer Lutheran.

He married Marilyn J. Hamm on July 28, 1957, in Ramona. She preceded him in death Sept. 7, 1999.

He was also preceded in death by brothers Erwin, Emil, Adolph, Herbert, and Edwin; sisters Alma Meyer, Ella Heidemann, and Wilma Nunn.

He is survived by sons John “Sonny” Backhus of Herington, Mike Backhus of Junction City, Steve Backhus of Abilene, and Gary Backhus of Salina; daughters Sue Johnson and Beth Bryant, both of Hope; Linda Strome of Herington, Jean Wilkins of Springfield, Missouri; brothers Wilbert of Tampa and Harry of Leavenworth; sister Frieda Bentz of Tampa; 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice House of Manhattan in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, Herington, 404 S Broadway St, Herington KS, 67449-3038.
