Hard labor: Inmate released for childbirth

Staff writer

A woman in county jail was released on her own recognizance Monday, but instead of getting to go home, she ended up taken to St. Luke Hospital instead.

An ambulance was summoned to the lobby of the sheriff’s office because Daisyanna Latisha Mitchell’s labor contractions were four minutes apart.

Sheriff Rob Craft said she had been in jail two or three days before her release.

According to County Attorney Courtney Boehm, Mitchell had been arrested for failure to appear in court and was released from jail “due to medical reasons.”

Kansas law requires the county to pay for medical care provided to an inmate in custody.

After being seen at St. Luke, Mitchell was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
