Hillsboro ponders cleanup

Staff writer

Hillsboro homeowners may have to clean up their properties or face the consequences.

City council members heard a presentation Tuesday that urged Hillsboro to join a state program of property cleanup.

Toby Kuhn with the Kansas Department of Health Environment said the program does not address not mowing lawns or pulling weeds and instead is focused on other outdoor hazards. KDHE would pick up 75% of the program’s $10,000 cost.

One problem recently encountered is solid waste in yards. Pallets, broken down furniture, trash, and inoperable lawn mowers are just a few items not allowed in yards.

When a person refuses to comply with a cleanup request, KDHE can get an administrative order. Hearings on the case would be handled by the state, not the city, he added.

At the end of the presentation, Mayor Lou Thurston told Kuhn the city would be in touch.

“It sounds like a good program,” he said.
