A Hillsboro man faces multiple charges after allegedly physically abusing a 26-year-old Hillsboro woman and her 2-year-old son last week in Hillsboro.

Michael Newman II, 25, Hillsboro, faces charges of aggravated battery, endangering a child, criminal restraint, battery, and violation of a protection from abuse order.

According to Hillsboro police chief Dan Kinning, the woman alleged that Newman grabbed her, pulled her hair, and struck her in the face on the night of Oct. 25.

“The boy was inadvertently struck but had no injuries,” Kinning said. “She had some bruising.”

At one point, Newman allegedly sat on top of the woman to prevent her from leaving the house, Kinning said, he also allegedly took the woman’s cell phone.

Newman allegedly monitored and threatened the woman, Kinning said, until she escaped to seek help. She notified law enforcement on Thursday at Marion County Courthouse.

Marion officer Lee Vogel investigated.

Newman was arrested at 2:01 p.m. Thursday and was served with a protection from abuse order once he was booked into Marion County Jail. He allegedly broke the terms of the order by calling the woman’s cell phone three times between 3:50 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. that day.

Vogel’s report indicated Newman was suspected of using drugs or narcotics at the time of the incident.
