Hillsboro credit union to close

Great Plains Federal Credit Union will close its Hillsboro branch Sept. 30 after determining member usage no longer justified the cost of operating the location.
The decision followed months of review, credit union president James Wileman said.
“The usage of Hillsboro doesn’t justify the expense to the overall credit union of keeping that branch open when service is accessible nearby and most of our transactions for those members occur online,” he said.
Five employees, four staff members, and one manager will transfer to other Great Plains branches, Wileman said.
Employees were notified last week before members were informed. Members needing in-person service will be directed to the McPherson branch, about 25 to 30 minutes away. Phone and online banking also will remain available.
The Hillsboro office has served the community for decades, originally operating as Gulf Oil Chemical Credit Union.
Wileman said the board recognized the branch’s long history before voting to close it. The building likely will be offered for sale after operations end, although no final decision has been made.
