Hett tackles first season as Marion High girls' coach

Marion High girls’ basketball coach Jason Hett has been busy getting to know his team this past week — a dream that came true after a return to his alma mater.

The Marion High graduate brings six years of experience as an athletic director at Central Christian in Huchinson overseeing a girls’ team that enjoyed multiple trips to state.

Hett, now athletic director for the high school, said he has similar aspirations for Marion his first year — and has plans to shake things up.

“We have a solid group of upper classman and a solid group of younger classmen,” he said. “We’re going to put some new stuff in and try new things.”

He has four returning seniors, Bethany Grimmett, Alfwenna Meyer, Chloe Burkholder, and Cameron White to provide leadership.

This past year’s team ended their season 1-7 for the year with a 53-27 loss against Inman.

Hett says he plans to work out a more assertive defense for the Warriors.

“They need to be more aggressive and confident. I look to build that this year — play hard and be aggressive,” he said.

Still, Hett said he likes what he is seeing so far from this team.

“They are a really good group. I have really enjoyed the first week,” he said. “They are very coachable and are working hard, not complaining at all. It has been a blast to get out there again.”

The Warrior’s season kicks off with a 6 p.m. home game Dec. 6 against Southeast of Saline.
