Goessel splits with Wakefield

Staff writer

A team attack in the first quarter propelled Goessel girls to a dominating 58-18 victory Friday over Wakefield.

Leah Booton scored six points and Abby Hannon launched a three-pointer as the Bluebirds coasted to a 16-1 lead after one period.

Taking advantage of Wakefield turnovers, Goessel expanded the lead to 32-10 at half. Rebounding well against the smaller Wakefield team, Goessel led 53-15 at the end of three, forcing a running clock for the fourth quarter.

Eden Hiebert led the team with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Brittney Hiebert scored 10; Hannon, 9, and Booton, 8.

Going into this week’s game against White City, the girls have won four straight after an opening night loss.

Boys fall short

Looking for their first victory of the season, Goessel boys fell just short Friday, losing 58-52.

Wakefield jumped off to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter, but Goessel chipped away in the second quarter.

Dylan Lindeman scored 11 in the quarter, and baskets from Jacob Hagewood and Carson Sterk gave the Bluebirds a 24-23 lead before Wakefield ended the half with a three-pointer and free throw.

Wakefield jumped out to a 44-35 lead in the second half before Jordan Griffin hit a three to begin another rally.

The Bluebirds got within two at 50-48 but in the last two minutes had to foul to stop the clock. Wakefield hit just enough free throws to win.

Lindeman led the team with a career high of 24 points. Griffin added 14, and Hagewood, 6.
