Fred Helmer

Fred “Fritz” Helmer, 90, Marion, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital in Marion.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Zeiner Funeral Home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday at Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery.

He was born Nov. 12, 1926, to David and Anna (Eberhardt) Helmer, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.

He married Edith L. Graham on Oct. 17, 1948. He owned and operated Helmer’s Service station in Marion. Prior to that he worked for Security Oil for more than 25 years.

He is survived by his wife Edith Helmer of Marion; sons, David Helmer of Marion and Dan Helmer of Norman, Oklahoma; daughters, Debra Thomason of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Deanna Gilbert of Alma; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers, August, George, Dave, Albert, Harry, John, Godfrey, Will, and Ezra Helmer, and sister Ann Boese.

Memorials are suggested to Hilltop Manor, Eastmoor United Methodist Church, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
