Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

APRIL 21

12:30 p.m. — A 5-day-old boy with jaundice at an apartment in the 100 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro was checked by Hillsboro ambulance attendants and taken to a hospital by his parents.

4:29 p.m. — A county jail inmate complaining of stomach pain was taken to NMC Health, Newton, by Marion ambulance.

10:17 p.m. — An 87-year-old woman with gastrointestinal bleeding was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to McPherson Center for Health.

APRIL 22

6:44 a.m. — A 65-year-old woman who may have suffered a stroke at a Parkside Homes apartment was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. An ambulance supervisor also responded.

9:18 a.m. — A 62-year-old woman with back pain and nausea at a home in the 700 block of E. Main St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

11:57 a.m. — A 71-year-old woman with fluid retention and having trouble breathing at an apartment in the 500 block of N. Vine St. in Hillsboro was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:21 p.m. — A 76-year-old man who fell at a Marion County Lake home near Rock Rd. and Lakeshore Dr. was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

1:42 p.m. — A patient earlier taken to NMC Health was taken back to Parkside Homes by Hillsboro ambulance.

2:18 p.m. — A natural gas odor reported at a home in the 300 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was not be detected by Marion firefighters.

4:16 p.m. — Marion firefighters could find no reason for a reported “hot smell” in the new county health department building in the 1200 block of E. Main St. in Marion. Hillsboro and Florence firefighters, Marion ambulance, and the county emergency manager also responded were dispatched. They were turned around before they arrived.

6:18 p.m. — A 53-year-old man reporting chest and arm pain, dizziness, and shortness of breath in a parking lot of Peabody-Burns High School was not taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance but reportedly was taken into police custody.

6:48 p.m. — A possible victim of domestic violence at a home in the 200 block of E. 2nd St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

THURSDAY

6:25 a.m. — A 67-year-old woman unable to feel one of her legs at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

10:32 a.m. — A 61-year-old man with appendicitis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.

11:13 a.m. — Goessel firefighters initially were dispatched for an unresponsive 74-year-old man foaming at the mouth at a home near 29th Ave. and Cimarron Rd. in McPherson County, but the call was canceled five minutes later.

2:08 p.m. — A fire alarm in a storeroom at St. Luke Living Center in Marion was determined to have been a false alarm before Marion firefighters arrived.

2:16 p.m. — An 82-year-old man with atrial fibrillation was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

5:17 p.m. — A reportedly blown transformer and utility pole fire in the 300 block of S. Eisenhower St. in Hillsboro was not found by Hillsboro firefighters.

5:39 p.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College townhouses was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm.

Around 5:51 p.m. — Hail up to baseball size was reported at multiple locations throughout the county. One observer reported that hail broke his vehicle’s windshield. Rotation was reported in clouds near Hillsboro and later near Florence and Burns. Brief, weak “land spout” tornadoes were observed along the Marion / Butler county line. Severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings continued until around 7:45 p.m.

6:42 p.m. — Equipment reportedly blown off a utility pole and onto a power line at Freeborn and Lawrence Sts. in Marion was not found by Marion firefighters.

7:07 p.m. — A 92-year-old woman with stroke symptoms in the 500 block of S. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:48 p.m. — A 54-year-old woman with chest pains at a home in the 800 block of Barker St. in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

FRIDAY

1:56 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was assigned by the county ambulance director to transfer an unspecified patient from the 100 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro to NMC Health.

4:53 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman who fell and hurt her shoulder at a home on Lois Ln. at Marion County Lake was taken to NMC Health by Marion ambulance.

5:03 p.m. — Hillsboro and Tampa ambulances were dispatched for a two-vehicle accident at 220th and Pawnee Rds. Three people involved in the wreck declined to be taken to a hospital. An ambulance supervisor also responded and told Tampa ambulance attendants they would not be needed.

7:10 p.m. — As soon as Marion ambulance returned to the county, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to transfer a 6-year-old girl from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

SATURDAY

5:50 a.m. — A 13-year-old who may have overdosed on antihistamines was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

5:04 p.m. — A man unable to get down from the top of a camper parked in a driveway in the 600 block of Hudson St. in Marion was helped down by Marion firefighters.

SUNDAY

Around 12:45 p.m. — Tree limbs reportedly penetrated a roof and damaged interior walls near Lehigh. Hail from pea to nearly golf ball size reportedly broke windows in several areas of the county. Torrential rain and a fog bank that followed it reduced visibility to near zero. Street flooding was reported in Florence and Peabody. Severe thunderstorm warnings continued until 2:30 p.m.

1:24 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters were dispatched to help direct traffic in near zero visibility after a wreck on hail-slickened K-15 north of 220th Rd. but had trouble locating an accident interfering with traffic.

1:42 p.m. — Fire alarms at Hillsboro Elementary School were determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been false alarms.

4:55 p.m. — A 76-year-old man who suffered a stroke was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.

MONDAY

8:19 a.m. — A 79-year-old woman who suffered a stroke was transferred by Marion ambulance on an emergency basis from St. Luke to St. Francis.

2:06 p.m. — At law enforcement’s request, Hillsboro ambulance and an ambulance supervisor checked but did not take to a hospital a driver on US-56 between Jade and Kanza Rds.
