Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
SEPT. 17
4:16 a.m. — A 71-year-old man who fell and hurt his hip while walking downstairs at his home in the 900 block of E. D St. in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
7:46 a.m. — The patient from the previous call was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:46 p.m.
1:07 p.m. — An 87-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 400 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to NMC Health by the county’s backup ambulance, based in Marion. Marion firefighters helped lift the woman. An ambulance supervisor also responded to the call. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:54 p.m.
6:01 p.m. — An injured 8-year-old girl was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:33 p.m.
6:22 p.m. — An 85-year-old woman with a chronic, uncontrolled nosebleed at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance, filling in for Hillsboro ambulance.
9:15 p.m. — Contacted by telephone instead of radio, Hillsboro ambulance transferred a patient from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:53 p.m.
11:01 p.m. — At the request of Marion police, who were following up on an earlier welfare check at a residence in the 500 block of N. Freeborn St. in Marion, Marion ambulance was called to check the woman for an undisclosed medical condition. She declined to be taken to a hospital.
SEPT. 18

THURSDAY
2:52 a.m. — An 83-year-old woman, shaky and having trouble breathing at Carriage Hills apartments in Florence, was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
5:03 a.m. — A 90-year-old man who fell at a home near 190th and Kanza Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
4:48 p.m. — Ramona, Goessel, and Herington firefighters and Marion firefighters and ambulance attendants conducted a three-hour training exercise at 160th and Pawnee Rds.
5:16 p.m. — A 96-year-old woman with extreme back pain at a home in the 300 block of E. Arbor Ct. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
5:25 p.m. — Called away from the firefighting exercise, Marion ambulance initially was sent to HCH to make an emergency transfer of a 77-year-old woman who suffered a stroke to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. However, an ambulance supervisor canceled the call and told Hillsboro ambulance attendants to expedite their call to Arbor Ct. and handled the transfer instead.
5:37 p.m. — Marion ambulance was sent to Peabody to stand by at a football game. After the game, the ambulance was told to remain in Peabody until a sheriff’s deputy and a Marion police officer, called as a backup by the sheriff, could determine whether medical help was needed after a Westview Manor official requested removal of a patient who had become violent.
5:57 p.m. — Tampa ambulance was sent to HCH to make another transfer to Wesley, but after arriving, the ambulance was sent back to Tampa because no beds were available at Wesley.
7:37 p.m. — En route back from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance was told to go directly to HCH to complete the transfer earlier assigned to Tampa ambulance. However, an ambulance supervisor changed the assignment to Marion ambulance, and Hillsboro ambulance was told instead to stand by at US-50 and Indigo Rd. extended until 7:44 p.m., when it was determined no ambulance was needed at Westview Manor. Hillsboro ambulance returned to its station at 8:19 p.m. Marion ambulance was back in its station at 10:41 p.m.
FRIDAY
2:33 a.m. — Marion ambulance attendants were called to help lift an uninjured 102-year-old woman who fell at Marion Assisted Living. She declined to be taken to a hospital.
9:25 a.m. — A report of a fire between two trailers in the 600 block of Locust St. in Peabody was determined by Peabody firefighters to be a controlled fire in a burn ring.
6:26 p.m. — Tampa ambulance stood by until 7:50 p.m. at Centre High School for a football game.
6:38 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood by until 10:47 p.m. during a storm-delayed football game at Goessel High School.
6:59 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 11:05 p.m. during a storm-delayed football game at Warrior Stadium.
8:25 p.m. — What was reported to be a field fire at US-50 and Quail Creek Rd. was quickly determined by Peabody firefighters to be contained rekindling of controlled burning of a brush pile.
8:44 p.m. — Fire near oil tanks at 110th and Yarrow Rds. was controlled within 20 minutes by Florence firefighters. Burns firefighters also were called, but the call was canceled before they arrived.
SATURDAY
11:12 a.m. — A 30-year-old man bleeding from his urethra at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.
11:17 a.m. — At the request of Hillsboro police, the county’s backup ambulance was sent to check a woman in the 200 block of S. Main St. in Hillsboro, but ambulance attendants could not find a patient there.
11:54 a.m. — At the request of Hillsboro police, attendants aboard the county’s backup ambulance checked an overheated woman in the 100 block of N. Main St. at the Arts and Crafts Fair. She declined to be taken to a hospital.
12:48 p.m. — Again at the request of Hillsboro police, attendants aboard the the county’s backup ambulance checked a second overheated woman at Main St. and Grand Ave. at the Arts and Crafts Fair. She was taken to HCH.
1:20 p.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched for a man who fell, possibly because of cardiac issues, in front of Fox Chiropractic at the Arts and Crafts Fair. An ambulance supervisor had trouble finding the patient. Hillsboro firefighters and other first responders help locate and evaluate him. They relocated him to the Hillsboro fire station. Before Marion ambulance arrived, the backup ambulance completed its run to HCH, told Marion ambulance attendants to disregard the call, and responded to the call instead. In the end, the patient declined to be taken to a hospital.
SUNDAY
12:18 a.m. — A 76-year-old man with atrial fibrillation was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 3:11 a.m.
12:38 p.m. — An 82-year-old woman who fell and cut her head in the 700 block of N. Peabody St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance, whose attendants helped her clean up and change clothes.
4:07 p.m. — The 82-year-old who earlier declined to be taken to a hospital was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:03 p.m.
8:59 p.m. — A confused 87-year-old woman who fell and hit her head at Salem Home was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
MONDAY
12:18 a.m. — A 47-year-old man who fell and hurt his back at a rental home in the 400 block of Walnut St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
9:36 a.m. — A diabetic 66-year-old woman, cold and clammy at a farmhouse near 100th and Alamo Rds., was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:47 a.m.
5:48 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood until 8:04 p.m. at a football game.
9:49 p.m. — A weak and sometimes incoherent 53-year-old woman at a residence in the 100 block of County Rd. in Tampa was taken to HCH by Tampa ambulance. An ambulance supervisor from Hillsboro also responded.
