Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MAY 28

9:27 a.m. — A trucker who suffered an apparent heart attack at a paving plant north of US-56 on Timber Rd. received cardiopulmonary resuscitation, was taken to St. Luke Hospital by Marion ambulance, but died before being transferred by a helicopter ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance and the county ambulance director helped with the call.

1:51 p.m. — A 14-year-old boy with a possibly dislocated knee at Peabody’s city pool was taken to a hospital by his mother before Hillsboro ambulance arrived.

5:33 p.m. — A smoking railroad tie at 110th and Old Mill Rds. was extinguished within half an hour by Peabody firefighters.

6:03 p.m. — A 64-year-old woman with head pain after she fell asleep and her vehicle rolled over on US-56 near Nighthawk Rd. was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Marion ambulance. Before it was known that no one was entrapped, Hillsboro rescue squad was dispatched along with Marion firefighters after Marion’s rescue truck would not start.

MAY 29

4:53 p.m. — A 2-year-old girl, seizing with a 101-degree fever in the 100 block of N. Lincoln St. in Marion, was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also responded, but the call was canceled before the ambulance arrived.

8:05 p.m. — A 62-year-old woman with pulmonary embolisms was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 11:07 p.m.

THURSDAY

2:03 a.m. — An 88-year-old man who hurt a knee and his toes in a fall at a Salem Home apartment was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:22 a.m. — A smoke alarm at Parkside Homes assisted living was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been activated by steam rather than smoke.

3:09 p.m. — A 76-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:52 p.m.

5:35 p.m. — A 22-year-old man who suffered facial injuries in a one-vehicle rollover accident at US-56/77 and 250th Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. A Lincolnville first responder, Lincolnville firefighters, and Marion rescue squad members also were dispatched.

5:37 p.m. — An uninjured 82-year-old woman who fell in the 700 block of Peabody St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A lone medical technician aboard Peabody ambulance also was dispatched as a first responder.

FRIDAY

1:46 p.m. — A 72-year-old woman with high blood pressure was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 3:57 p.m.

10:23 p.m. — Two people injured in a two-vehicle accident at US-56 and Remington Rd. were taken to separate county hospitals. A 58-year-old woman who complained of an ankle injury was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance. A 65-year-old woman who hurt her hip was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion firefighters and rescue squad member also were dispatched. Ambulance attendants originally asked about a helicopter ambulance but canceled the request after learning that the nearest one was in Missouri.

11:08 p.m. — With Marion and Hillsboro ambulances tied up and Peabody ambulance not available, Tampa ambulance — more than 31 miles away — was dispatched for a partially responsive 36-year-old man who had been drinking, fell downstairs, hurt his chin, and was lying in a pool of blood in the 200 block of Maple St. in Peabody. Peabody police on the scene attempted to contact ambulance attendants, but they did not arrive at their station to head to Peabody until 12 minutes after the call came in. Instead, police called for Peabody firefighters to help until the ambulance arrived. Meanwhile, Hillsboro ambulance, finishing up at St. Luke, headed to Peabody as well. Although Hillsboro ambulance was closer, Tampa ambulance continued en route until after Hillsboro ambulance arrived, 30 minutes after the original call. The patient eventually was taken to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:18 a.m.

SATURDAY

12:27 a.m. — With Hillsboro and Peabody ambulances not available, Marion ambulance was sent to a farmhouse near 60th and Nighthawk Rds., southwest of Peabody, to check a report of a bearded, shirtless, shoeless man in his 20s or 30s sitting on a front porch and what a deputy on the scene termed “extremely odd behavior.” However, the ambulance was called off before it arrived.

2:13 a.m. — A 65-year-old woman with multiple fractures — possibly the accident victim from earlier — was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

3:37 a.m. — A 58-year-old woman with a brain bleed — again, possibly one of the victims from the earlier accident — was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance was instructed to wait 30 minutes until Marion ambulance returned to the county before starting its transfer. Hillsboro ambulance returned to its quarters at 6:26 a.m.

2:35 p.m. — An Eagle Med helicopter ambulance airlifted a patient from HCH to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

10:29 p.m. — Marion ambulance, stationed along with the county’s backup ambulance at Chingawassa Days in Marion, reported examining a patient who declined to be taken to a hospital.

SUNDAY

12:24 a.m. — An 86-year-old woman who passed out at a home in the 300 block of W. B St. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:29 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance transferred its previous patient, diagnosed with an electrolyte imbalance, from HCH to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:08 a.m.

11:21 a.m. — An uninjured 82-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 700 block of Peabody St. in Peabody was helped up by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:19 p.m. — Hillsboro police and ambulance attendants checked a dog bite victim at 3rd and Washington Sts. in Hillsboro. The victim declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:46 p.m. — Peabody, Burns, and Florence firefighters and Hillsboro ambulance were dispatched for what Peabody police determined — and Peabody firefighters verified — was a series of false alarms at Westview Manor in Peabody.

MONDAY

7:51 a.m. — A 50-year-old man with stomach pains, vomiting, and diarrhea in the 700 block of W. A St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:46 a.m. — An uninjured 39-year-old man who fell out a bed at a residence in the 600 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was helped up by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. He declined to be taken to a hospital. Peabody ambulance was paged but did not answer.

11:23 a.m. — A carbon monoxide alarm at a residence on US-50 near Wagon Wheel Rd. was checked by Florence firefighters and determined to be a false alarm.

11:38 a.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched to a farmhouse near US-50 and 90th Rd. for a medical alarm that was canceled by the alarm company before the ambulance arrived.

11:49 a.m. — The 39-year-old who fell earlier in the day in Peabody fell and this time was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Peabody ambulance was paged but did not answer.

1:19 p.m. — A 59-year-old man unable to move and having trouble breathing on the floor at a farm near 310th and Diamond Rds. was taken to HCH by Tampa ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance attendants helped lift the patient.

3:04 p.m. — A 53-year-old woman with atrial fibrillation was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 5:14 p.m.

6:45 p.m. — A 2-year-old boy with bronchitis and hypoxia was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to St. Francis. The ambulance returned to Marion at 9:19 p.m.

10:15 p.m. — At a deputy’s request, Marion ambulance was dispatched to check a cut finger on a 14-year-old boy taken to the county’s juvenile intake facility adjacent to the Marion police station. The boy was not taken to a hospital.
