Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

SEPT. 5

1:31 a.m. — A 71-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred by Marion ambulance on a non-emergency basis from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:33 a.m.

8:10 a.m. — A 61-year-old man who had hip surgery a week earlier and fell at a residence in the 300 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken by Marion ambulance to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center.

10:04 a.m. — Just as the ambulance was returned to Marion, it was dispatched to the 100 block of N. Freeborn St. for a 79-year-old woman who fell and hurt her shoulder. She was taken to St. Luke.

12:52 p.m. — Lost Springs firefighters initially were dispatched to reports of a grass fire near railroad tracks west of US-56/77 and 350th Rd., but Herington firefighters reported that the fire actually was north of there in Dickinson County and was being handled by them.

3:27 p.m. — An 86-year-old man, possibly suffering from sepsis, was transferred by Marion ambulance, inexplicably filling in for Hillsboro ambulance, from Hillsboro Community Hospital to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 5:45 p.m.

SEPT. 6

5:27 p.m. — A 72-year-old man, bleeding from the head after falling 10 feet off a ladder onto concrete outside a farmhouse near US-56 and Quail Creek Rd., was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. The county ambulance director initially offered to respond to the call as well.

7:10 p.m. — Fire started by a combine in a corn field east of K-15 and 250th Rds. was extinguished within 15 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.

11:16 p.m. — Fire in a tree at Peabody’s burn pit was extinguished within 40 minutes by Peabody firefighters.

THURSDAY

1:29 p.m. — A vehicle fully engulfed in flames along US-56/77 near 210th Rd. was extinguished along with an accompanying grass fire by Marion firefighters who spent 40 minutes at the scene.

6:36 p.m. — Peabody ambulance attendants were asked by police to check on a 30-year-old man at the Peabody Dollar General store. He was not taken to a hospital.

8:30 p.m. — A 63-year-old man exhibiting symptoms of having a second seizure at Westview Manor in Peabody was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance, which returned to Hillsboro at 10:16 p.m.. Peabody ambulance also responded to the call.

FRIDAY

7:04 a.m. — Parents of a 13-year-old boy who had a seizure at a home in the 200 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody declined to have him taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A lone emergency medical technician aboard Peabody ambulance also was dispatched as a first responder.

12:01 p.m. — A 70-year-old man who fell at a farm near 240th and Indigo Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:42 p.m. — A 49-year-old man needing a surgical consultation was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:25 p.m.

7:14 p.m. — Marion ambulance, standing by in place of Hillsboro ambulance at a football game in Hillsboro, was dispatched to a rental home in the 400 block of N. Walnut St. in Marion for a 3-year-old bleeding from the mouth. Parents opted not to have the ambulance take the child to a hospital.

8:20 p.m. — A 21-year-old man with a rapid heart rate was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 11:23 p.m.

SATURDAY

12:30 a.m. — A resident and police reported unauthorized burning after midnight of cardboard, paper products, and a tire in an enclosure in the 200 block of S. Olive St. in Peabody. Peabody firefighters allowed the burning to continue but reported that the matter might be referred for legal follow-up.

11:38 a.m. — A 95-year-old woman who fell and hurt her shoulder at Parkside Homes assisted living in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:17 p.m. — A person who suffered injuries described as minor in a one-vehicle accident at Meridian and 120th Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance, instead opting to be transferred by a McPherson County ambulance. Goessel first responders and firefighters also were dispatched.

5:36 p.m. — An 80-year-old man who may have suffered a stroke at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Florence was taken on an emergency basis to St. Francis by Marion ambulance. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Marion at 9:06 p.m.

SUNDAY

1:35 a.m. — An 81-year-old woman who fell at a residence the 700 block of N. Peabody St. in Peabody was helped up by a lone EMT aboard Peabody ambulance. She declined to be taken to a hospital. A call for Hillsboro ambulance was canceled.

2:55 a.m. — Sheriff’s deputies asked Marion ambulance to stand by to check an uncooperative passenger in his 60s who was forced to get off an Amtrak train at a Main St. crossing in Florence. However, they subsequently told dispatchers that the ambulance wasn’t needed and that deputies would take the man to St. Luke for evaluation.

4:32 a.m. — A fire reported in the 200 block of S. Olive St. in Peabody was not found by Peabody firefighters.

9:40 a.m. — An 80-year-old woman who fell at Marion Assisted Living declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

MONDAY

2:44 p.m. — A 65-year-old man was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:40 p.m.

8:10 p.m. — Marion ambulance drove north on Remington Rd., rendezvoused with private vehicle driving a choking 33-year-old man toward Marion, and took the man, who reportedly was choking on chicken soup, the rest of the way to St. Luke. The county ambulance director also responded to the call.
