City clerk announces retirement plans

Staff writer

Peabody City Clerk Stephanie Lago submitted an announcement to city council members Monday night of her intention to retire from her position effective Dec. 31.

Lago has served as city treasurer as well as city clerk and has been employed in the front office of Peabody City Building for 16 years.

The advance notice of her intent will give Mayor Larry Larsen and council members time to seek and hire a replacement.

In other business:

  • Council members went into executive session to discuss non-elected personnel. On return to open meeting, they approved a motion to begin the process for background checks and interviews of applicants for a new public works employee. The city will continue to take applications until the position is filled.
  • Lago reported that County Clerk Tina Spencer confirmed that Peabody’s special street tax question will be on the November ballot.
  • Peabody Police Chief Bruce Burke introduced his department’s new officer, Aaron Slater, to the mayor and council.
