Chili cookoff at county lake scheduled for Oct. 1

Staff writer

A 16th annual chili cookoff is scheduled for Oct. 1 at Marion County Park and Lake.

Entry fee for the competition — which starts at 11:30 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. in the lake hall — is $15. Tasting kits are $5. The best chili will win $100, and second and third places will win $50 and $35 respectively.

Free registration for the lake’s 9th annual car show begins at 10 a.m. The show, featuring cars, trucks, motorcycles, and beater vehicles, will begin at 11:30 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for best in class.

A 13th annual corn hole tournament will start after the chili cookoff. Cost will be $10 per person or $20 per team. Money raised during the events will go toward improvements at the lake, superintendent Isaac Hett said.

This year, he’s looking at adding solar lights in places where there’s not electricity for street lights.

Wichita resident Cecil Sanchez again plans to make chili to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation. He also will sell homemade salsa.
