Burdick celebrates 50th Labor Day

Temperatures in the upper 90s did not deter people from coming out Monday to commemorate Burdick’s 50th Labor Day celebration.
Both a 2 p.m. parade and a 4 p.m. ranch rodeo were well attended.
More than 50 parade entries were led by grand marshals Dan and Dee Hageberg, owners of Burdick Meat Market.
Their family has been in the business for more than 100 years. Dan’s grandfather Olaf purchased it in 1921, and his father, Gary, took over at age 20 after Olaf died unexpectedly. With his wife, Dee, Dan has been managing the business since 2015.
A Diamond Valley High School alumni float won the parade’s theme prize. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the school’s first graduating class in 1923.
A Burdick United Methodist Church float placed first among other floats.
Mike Beneke of Lincolnville pulled his grandfather’s antique tractor behind a huge, modern tractor. It won first place.
Burdick UMC served homemade ice cream during the festivities, and Flint Hills Community Band provided musical entertainment.
