At least one county bridge could be closed as a result of county commissioners touring three bridges on the state’s fracture critical list Monday morning.

The one commissioners might close, a metal span bridge on Goldenrod Rd. a half mile south of 170th Rd., is in such poor condition commissioners voted to begin procedures to consider closing it.

Commissioner Dan Holub said the bridge had a lot of debris caught on it from recent flooding.

Commissioner Randy Dallke noted the condition of the concrete footings.

“The concrete on top of the structure has exposed rebar,” Dallke said.

“I don’t think it’s safe at all,” Holub said. “As for the farm equipment, I don’t think it could handle the big farm equipment.”

Holub said the section of road it’s on is “sort of a nothing road” and he has no intention of replacing the bridge.

“It’s not a major artery at all,” he said.

The vote to schedule a public hearing on closing the bridge was unanimous.

Another bridge, already scheduled for replacement, would cost $7,500 for state inspection. That bridge is a metal span over Cottonwood River on Alfalfa Rd., a half-mile south of U.S. 50.

“I see nothing wrong with putting up signs to close it,” Dallke said when commissioners looked at the bridge.

Commissioner Lori Lalouette questioned closing the bridge earlier than necessary, contending it gets a lot of traffic.

“A lot of people in Florence use that bridge,” she said.

The $7,500 for state inspection is what’s sticking in commissioners’ throats.

“That’s a lot of money,” Holub said.

No vote was taken on the Alfalfa Rd. bridge, but commissioners agreed to talk further with the state about whether the bridge could be closed until a new bridge is built or omitted from inspection because it’s already scheduled for replacement.

Commissioners also viewed a bridge on 370th Rd. a quarter-mile west of Sunflower Rd.
