Break out the hoses, car wash closes

Corey Lawson of Hutchinson, owner of Peabody’s only car wash, paid a visit to Peabody City Hall last week, and city clerk Barb Seeney told city council Monday that Lawson has abandoned it.

“He has taken his equipment and he has shut it down,” Seeney said. “He said there was not enough cash flow to keep it open.”

Lawson has numerous car washes in towns throughout central Kansas under the name Coach Lite Car Wash, including two locations in Hillsboro.

Seeney said Lawson made it clear that he did not intend to maintain the property.

“He does not want to receive notices for mowing; he is not going to mow it,” she said. “He is not going to pay his property taxes on it. He said he doesn’t care if it goes to tax sale.”

County records indicate the assessed valuation of the property is $2,798, with a total tax bill of $788.68. Half of the bill is paid, and is not listed as delinquent.

Still, it sounded as if Lawson would be happy for someone to take it off of his hands.

“He said anyone can have it if they want it,” Seeney said. “I don’t know if anyone wants a car wash around here; it doesn’t sound like it was doing very good.”
