When Canton resident Rex Abrahams learned about an estate auction for his former dentist, E.K. Schroeder, he knew he wanted to attend.
Abrahams has fond memories of Schroeder.
Driving in Hillsboro last Friday, he spotted flags for the Pilsen Packrats auction and went inside.
The auction offered an assortment of vintage toys and games, camping gear, Boy Scout items, household supplies, sports equipment, toy guns and holsters, hobby supplies, and household items.
Among the things he bought were two bows and quivers of arrows for his granddaughter’s archery hobby.
The eighth-grader has enjoyed archery for eight years, having learned the sport at summer camps, Abrahams said.
“She really likes it,” he said.
Hesston, where his granddaughter lives, has an archery park near I-135, he said.
Instead of calling her, he waited for her to come over.
“I surprised her, showing her what I bought her, and she was excited,” Abrahams said.
One is a learning bow, such as he used when learning the sport.
The other is a professional bow made in 1963 by Bear Archery.
Auctioneer Joe Vinduska had to drop his asking bid down to $5 before anyone bid, but once bidding started, Abrahams didn’t get the bow until he offered $85.
What he didn’t know until he looked up information on the serial-numbered bow that it’s still in production and now sells for $500.
Abrahams also bought cap guns and holsters and a leather crafting kit.
