REPORTED

These accident reports were released this past week by law enforcement agencies:

SHERIFF

US-50 west of Nighthawk Rd.

Thomas O. Moloney, 28, Fort Benning, Georgia, hit a deer at 9:54 p.m. June 16 with his 2016 Ford F-150 pickup, which sustained disabling damage to its front and was towed.

240th Rd. west of K-15

Dominic J. Bartel, 16, rural Hillsboro, lost control of a 2004 Chevrolet S-10 pickup on a rock road at 5:30 p.m. June 17. The pickup ran off the road to the right, hit a fixed object, and flipped onto its side.

Neither Dominic nor his three teenage passengers — Andrew G. Bartel, 14, of the same address; Lyle Fickes, 17, of a different rural Hillsboro address; and Lance T. Walker, 14, Hillsboro — reported injury.

The truck, owned by Scott Bartel of the same rural Hillsboro address, sustained extensive damage and was towed.

Deputy Travis Wilson’s report blamed the accident on inattentive driving and driving too fast for conditions. No tickets were issued.

Hillsboro ambulance, firefighters, and rescue squad members — and, initially, Marion ambulance — all were dispatched to the accident.

Chisholm Trail Rd. south of 120th Rd.

James W. Melton, 78, rural Goessel, had to be extricated from his 1997 Toyota Camry and taken by Hillsboro ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, after the car ran off the road to the right at 9 a.m. June 21 and traveled nearly 180 feet before turning on its side in a ditch.

Deputy Landis Goodman’s report stated that the car was destroyed but indicated no cause for the accident.

According to monitored transmissions, Goessel firefighters, assisted by Hillsboro rescue squad members and Goessel first responders, stabilized the vehicle, tended to injuries, and cut a windshield to free Melton from the wreckage after 25 minutes of entrapment.

US-50 east of Nighthawk

Benjamin M. Herring, 19, Moberly, Missouri, hit a small animal at 12:31 a.m. June 22 with his 2019 Hyundai Ioniq, which sustained damage to its front and undercarriage and was towed.

Herring and passengers Shawn D. Haley, 21, of the same address and Jaelen W. Graves, 20, of a different address in Moberly did not report injury.

K-15 north of 140th Rd.

Steve F. Schuler, 63, Rossville, hit a deer at 4:10 p.m. June 22 with a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup owned by Kansas Crop Improvement of Manhattan.

Deputy Derek Fetrow’s report states that the pickup sustained only minor damage.

US-56 north of 250th Rd.

Drew E. Hanken, 19, McPherson, hit a deer at 6:25 a.m. Friday with his 2014 Ford Fusion, which sustained disabling damage and was towed.

MARION

Thorp St. north of Main St.

Saying he was blinded by headlights of an approaching vehicle at 1 a.m. Friday, Robert D. Magathan, 74, Marion, turned 33 feet before reaching the intersection and drove his 2015 Chevrolet Sonata nearly 12 feet into a ditch rather than west onto Main St.

Officer Duane McCarty’s report states that the car sustained only minor damage but was towed. The accident was not reported until police discovered the vehicle 5½ hours later.
