“Little Shop of Horrors” opens Saturday at PBHS
The fanciful hit production “Little Shop of Horrors” will make its Peabody debut Saturday at 7 p.m. at Brown Gymnasium.
Peabody-Burns High School thespians will give an encore performance at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The show tells a bizarre tale of Seymour, played by Zach Stephy, who lives on skid row and works in a flower shop. When he happens upon a man-eating plant from outer space, his life turns around.
Madelaine Beal plays opposite Stephy as Audrey, an innocent lass with a big heart who gets caught up in the odd goings-on.
“It’s silly, but also very dark,” band and vocal music director Laura Leitnaker said. “It’s a really fun show and it fits the number of kids we have and their ability and talents.”
Leitnaker said the friendship between Stephy and Beal adds to their portrayls.
“They have a natural chemistry that’s good to watch,” she said. “Seymour is supposed to be shy and quiet and a little dorky, and Zach enjoys playing characters like that. Madelaine is kind of new to the theater world, but she’s doing great. She’s a very talented young lady and has grabbed the bull by the horns for her part.”
Language arts instructor Sarah McQuery directs the production. Knowing the play and people who have performed it, as well as having connections for some of the props was a plus for choosing “Little Shop of Horrors,” Leitnaker said.
Advance tickets are $5 for ages 6 to 60 and $4 for children under 5 and seniors. They can be purchased from cast members, McQuery, Leitnaker, and at the high school office. Ticket prices at the door are $2 more.
