january 3, 1957

The “driest year on record” up until now had been old dusty ’36, but that record fell to a newcomer 20 years later when ’56 came along.

The first baby of 1957 to be born at St. Luke Hospital is Dale Vernon Hiebert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hiebert of route 1, Florence. The young man was born at 7:04 a.m. January 3 and weighed 8 pounds 9 ounces.

Dr. and Mrs. T.C. Ensey and three sons left by plane Christmas Day for the Orange Bowl game at Miami, Florida. They enjoyed the game and pageantry and the boys enjoyed swimming in the warm sunshine.

Bill Meyer will be installed as 1957 president of the Marion Kiwanis Club at Monday noon’s meeting. He succeeds Rosse B. Case, who served in that capacity during the past year.

Carolyn Merrill asked friends for a brunch Saturday morning for a get-together of high school friends who are now away at school. Guests were Etta Mae Rempel, Carol Allen, Brenda Razor, Joyce Conyers, all attending Emporia State; Ann Davies at Kansas State; and Judy Thatch, Johns’ Hopkins in Baltimore. Carolyn is a student at KU.

The Marion law firm of Wheeler and Westerhaus will open an office in Hillsboro when the new professional building there is completed.
