Old settlers are what Old Settlers Day is all about. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Janzen, Anton Stika, and John Hett are pictured as they share a bench in the park after the parade. They found a comfortable spot in the shade and chatted with friends and strangers.

Don Gillett of Marion took third place in the National Hammered Dulcimer contest at Winfield last week. He received a Doug Ecker dulcimer, a trophy, and $100 cash.

The Pilsen Polka Pals and many of their friends have returned from a polka tour of Europe. Among those on the tour were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Klenda, Mr. and Mrs. George Svitak, Lillian Benda, Irma Funk, and Jane Commerford of Marion.

Michael W. Good and Edward Hett have been selected as the Marion County recipients of James J. Ryan scholarship at the University of Kansas Medical Center for the 1977-’78 academic year. Ryan, a Florence grocery man who died in 1975, endowed the scholarship fund with the hope recipients would return to Marion County to practice medicine after graduating and serving internships and residencies.

Donna Stovall was selected as Sweetheart of the Marion High School chapter of Future Farmers of America. Other nominees were Cindy Bernhardt, Lori Kelsey, Donita Makovec, and Kathy Sandwell.
