Monday was a dark day for Marion County Commission. Commissioners learned that the county lost $3 million in oil production valuation because of a change in state law. Commissioners also received word that health insurance costs increased $32,000 and worker’s compensation increased $25,000.

Work continues at Marion Elementary School as crews lay brick to completes an exterior wall of the school addition. The project, which will move all kindergarten through sixth grade classes to Marion Elementary, is planned for completion by the time school opens in August.

Marion city employee Ron Hurtig is pictured as he scrapes a year’s filth from one of the numerous colored lights in the Memorial Fountain at Central Park. Hurtig, an electrician, spent Thursday morning getting the fountain in working condition for enjoyment of the public during summer months.

Robert Stillwell, principal at Centre High School for the past 10 years, is retiring in June after 33 years of classroom and administrative work in education.

Thirty-six students graduated Sunday afternoon from Marion High School at commencement exercises in Marion Gymnasium. Alan Meisinger was valedictorian, and Lori Tice was salutatorian. Both also received an outstanding senior award based on leadership, participation, academics, and loyalty to school activities.
