Zion Mennonite Church members will share talents

A unique opportunity to learn about a variety of subjects will present itself this summer when members of Zion Mennonite Church at Elbing share their talents with others in this area.

Fourteen activities will be offered at little or no charge to anyone interested. It is not necessary to be affiliated with Zion to participate in the program. Many classes are open to either adults or children, but some are subjects that may interest both.

"We want to share some of those things we enjoy with people in the area that we may not otherwise get to know," said June Entz, program manager. The plan to offer special classes and programs was developed by Zion's church council several months ago.

The first event will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Osage Nature Trail north of East Lake Park in Harvey County. The hike, led by Annette Voth, will focus on identification of wildflowers, grasses, and other plants native to the Kansas prairie.

Participants are urged to wear comfortable hiking or walking shoes, and bring water. There is no charge for the class, but it is limited to 10 people, age 14 and older, and registration must be turned in by Thursday.

The final class will take place at the church at 7 p.m. Aug. 19. Instructor Keith Sprunger will give a presentation called, "Finding History and Excitement in your Kansas Hometowns." Topic notes in the program brochure remind us that "Sometimes less is more. There are many treasures to be found in our hometowns."

Between the hike Saturday at the Osage Nature Trail and the discovery of hometown treasures in August are a wealth of other topics sure to interest area residents.

Creating dried flower arrangements, baking French bread, cooking foods of the Russian Mennonite Culture, basic auto maintenance and tire changing (a good course for daughters — and sons — going off to college in the fall), as well as wheat weaving, stained glass instruction, and basic basketball skills for youngsters are just some of the classes to be offered.

Most are free or charge a nominal fee. Advance registration is required for most of the sessions. Registration forms are printed in program brochures available in many Peabody businesses.
