Youth attend leadership showcase

Youth from the Peabody-Burns Junior/Senior High School chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America recently participated in STAR events and State Leadership Showcase held April 8 and 9 in Wichita.

Marie Unruh was a judge, Shannon Welsh and Bethany Gwinup served as runners, and Heather Eason timed for the state STAR Events competition.

Students attended workshops on Tuesday that challenged, informed, and motivated them to learn more by taking action through FCCLA.

Cathy Silvers, Peabody-Burns chapter adviser and four PBHS students joined 2,000 other advisers and members at the meeting.

The "Lights, Cameras, Take Action" theme was reinforced by recognizing members and chapters for their participation in FCCLA. Silvers received recognition for her work in District G, receiving the "Spirit in Advising Award" award.

Members had the opportunity to listen to keynote speaker Judge Tom Webb, who showed how youth can value and appreciate the qualities of others, and how to make a positive difference in a seemingly negative world.

FCCLA is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by its members. Participation in state and national programs, as well as chapter activities, helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
