When the Whitney Brothers, managers of the Mayflower Theatre, announced last week that they would admit children who brought 10 tin cans to the theatre on Thursday night, little did they think that the number of cans would run into the thousands. From every part of town early Thursday evening, boys and girls could be seen carrying their strings of tin cans to the Mayflower to pay their admissions for the evening's entertainment. Several of the youngsters brought several hundred cans each. The dollar which was offered to the boy or girl who brought the greatest number of cans went to a little Mexican lad, who brought in more than 600 cans. The cans were brought in boxes, burlap sacks, and one lot was contained in a bed tick. They were piled high in front of the theatre and hauled away the following day. This was an idea of the Whitney brothers to lend a little publicity and encouragement to the clean-up week campaign, and the results were certainly gratifying.
When it rains hard enough to drown geese, Mrs. Fred Taylor, who lives northeast of town, thinks it has about reached the limit. Fred Taylor had just covered his poultry house roof with roofing composition when the big rain and hail storm came last Wednesday night. The roof was punctured in many places and three of Mrs. Taylor's young geese were drowned.
