February 26, 1976
Mrs. David Barros of Dallas, Texas, was a weekend guest of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dannenfelser and family. Additional Sunday dinner guests were Mr. and Mrs. Noel Dannenfelser.
February is a very unusual month. In it we have two past presidents' birthdays, Valentine's Day, and Groundhog Day. It is also the shortest month with only 28 days. However, this year we are celebrating Leap Year. This makes the month one day longer, 29 days. On this one extra day, 60 years ago, Clarence Smith and Mary Gibson were united in marriage. Mary met Clarence while working in her parents' restaurant in Newton. There was no special reason they married on that day. It just seemed like the right time. Clarence, 84, and Mary, 86, have celebrated only 15 anniversaries on the real day of Feb. 29, counting this year. In 1966, for their 50th anniversary, they spent three months in California visiting relatives. They have one daughter, Mrs. Jack (Luthena) Hopping. Mr. and Mrs. Hopping live in Wichita. A family dinner for the Leap Year couple is being planned for Feb. 29.
