Tuesday, May 25, was "Melvin Moore Day" in the Florence Elementary School. Melvin is retiring after 20 years of service as custodian in the Florence schools. The students, teachers, lunch room ladies, and the school secretary and custodian Chet Hatcher, had a surprise for Melvin and presented him with a retirement scrapbook containing autographs of all students from the kindergarten through the sixth grade and a fishing tackle box so he can enjoy one of his favorite pastimes — fishing. Florence's big Memorial weekend is over!! Thousands of motorcycle fans gathered here in what looked to be the largest attendance ever for the Grand Prix Motorcycle Races. Five hundred fourteen racers was the actual count at the start of the race. Only four accidents were radioed to the Florence ambulance during the race.
