Friday, July 1st, the special war measure took effect, and it is necessary to have revenue stamps attached to a great variety of documents affected thereby. Following are a few of the most common articles subject to a tax: on all named checks, 2 cents; on each bill of lading for freight, 1 cent; on each telephone message, 15 cents; on each telegraph message, 1 cent; on all tobacco or snuff, 12 cents per pound; on beer, $2 per barrel.
