August 3, 1978

Marion Reservoir led the Kansas lakes in attendance with 361,000 visitors during the first six months of 1978, followed by Council Grove with 348,500. The Tulsa District Corps of Engineers also reported that a total of 1.6 million visits were recorded at the six Corps lakes in Kansas.

Gayla Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Joe Williams, Cedar Point, and an outstanding athlete at Chase County High School, recently attended the tryouts for the Midwest junior women's basketball team at St. Louis, Mo., and was one of 12 women selected. She left for Colorado Springs July 14 for 10 days of workouts. A national team will be selected from the four regional teams and will compete at Lima, Peru, in late August.

August 13, 1953

The changeover to dial telephone has been definitely set for Sept. 1 at 1:30 p.m. according to Lloyd Simpson of Newton, district manager of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Work has been progressing on the changeover according to schedule.

Arrangements for a free barbecue in Florence on Labor Day were discussed Monday night at the Chamber of Commerce and the Labor Day committee was given the authority to go ahead with its plans. In addition to the free barbecue there will be races, a flower show, a free street dance, the big parade, 4-H show, home talent acts, band concerts, and other entertainment. The possibility of a wrestling match was investigated and left to the discretion of the committee.

August 16, 1928

Kansas hunters are given two days to shoot prairie chickens this year. This decision has been reached by the Forestry, Fish, and Game Commission. The season was reduced from 10 days to two due to the tremendous kills of two years ago and the extremely unfavorable hatching conditions for several years. The daily bag limit is five and the season limit is 10.

The foundation and basement is finished and the framework has been started on the new farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Waner, four miles west of Florence on the 8th Street Road. The new home will have six nice rooms, bath, and closets, and a full basement. The foundation is 26 by 44 feet and the home will replace the one destroyed by the fire early last spring.

August 13, 1897

A petition signed by club men, politicians, and others in Topeka asks Gov. Leedy to order the police to be less zealous in their enforcement of the prohibitory law. It is not to be presented until it shall have been circulated through all the clubs in the city. It has already 2,000 signers. The club men promise not to violate the law by selling to strangers if they may be allowed to have their beer at their clubs.

The Prime Minister of Spain, after Mass, was reading and conversing with some reporters, when an Italian man approached and, drawing a revolver, without a word fired three shots at him. The premier was carried to his room and expired at 1:30 p.m. His last words, uttered with his dying breath, were: "Long Live Spain."
