The spring piano recital by students of Mrs. Barry Linnens was held Sunday, May 7, at the Florence United Methodist Church. A large attendance made the afternoon very special for students Denise Sellers, Racquel Allison, Jill Dannenfelser, Stephanie Williams, Lori and Lynette Lalouette, Rolana and Tawnya Ludwig, and Kelly Linnens.

Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Linnens, Wichita, announced the birth of a 7 pound, 8 ounce son, Brian Patrick, April 20, 1978. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Linnens, Cedar Point. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Don Williams, Florence. Great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Linnens, Cedar Point, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Cain, Emporia, and Mrs. Florence Robinson, Florence.

MAY 14, 1953

Cooperation from various groups made possible the erection of street signs in Florence this week. This much needed improvement was instigated last year by the Hi-Y Club and the Chamber of Commerce. The Hi-Y Club purchased the street signs and the Chamber of Commerce secured the pipe from the Santa Fe to erect the signs. Finally, for the first time, the streets in Florence are marked so that a stranger may find an address he might be looking for.

Don Bartlett and Ed Robinson won second and third respectively in the 100-yard dash and both qualified for the state meet to be held in Manhattan this Saturday. Robinson also took fourth in the 220-yard dash and the Florence half-mile relay team took fourth. Members of the relay team were Gene Pruitt, Ed Robinson, John Meirowsky, and Don Bartlett.

MAY 10, 1928

Of interest to all those who were affected by the laying of the federal aid project which built the pavement from the east end of the Fifth Street bridge to the east end of the pavement, will be the announcement by the county commission that the money paid for this pavement by the taxpayers will be refunded by the county. Most of the cost was paid by the federal government and state, but nevertheless, hundreds of dollars had been assessed against the property adjacent to the resolute for the property owner's share of its construction.

May 14, 1897

When the House met today in continuance of the legislative day of yesterday, Mr. Underwood of Alabama and Mr. Ellis of Oregon advocated the restoration of the reservations made by President Cleveland to the people. After some further debate, by a vote of 100 to 39, the House refused to concur in the Senate amendment to revoke President Cleveland's order as to forest reservations.

At 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon, in Sterling, there was a heavy rain, fully two inches falling inside of an hour. Heavy hail fell south of town. Lightning burned out a number of fire alarms, electric lights, and telephone wires.
