One day last month, Ronald Harms saw something reddish in a field near their home south of Peabody. Upon investigation, it turned out to be a helium-filled balloon with a message tied to it. The message said that the balloon had been released in California and asked the finder to make contact. It turns out the balloon was released by fourth grader Cindy Tomlinson in Torrance, Calif., as part of her class' "balloon blastoff" and there was a prize for the one that traveled the farthest. One of the amazing things about the incident was that the balloon was found on March 18 — the day after it was released in California. It made the 2,000 mile trip in a little more than 24 hours.

Arnold Haller, a bookkeeper and ex-lieutenant in the German army, shot himself in the temple at his boarding house in an attempt to commit suicide. The attempt was unsuccessful and he then flung himself out the window attempting to fall to his death, a distance of 25 feet. Picking himself up from his second failed attempt, he threw himself in front of a passing freight wagon, causing himself to receive two broken legs. He is expected to make a full recovery. His employers say that they can not fathom why he may have done so as his business accounts are all in order and they are not aware of anything troubling in his personal life.

Fred Harvey must be running a peculiar kind of a hotel at Newton, judging from the item in the Kansan: "Fred Harvey fed a car of stock here today."
