MARCH 23, 1978

Douglas Ludwig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Ludwig, is a member of the Kansas Wesleyan Philharmonic Choir, which is beginning its annual spring concert tour March 24 at the First Presbyterian Church in Salina. The philharmonic choir is one of the college's richest traditions and includes singers from all departments of the campus. It is a non-auditioned group and the largest musical activity at Wesleyan.

Just a reminder — all kids of the community are invited to come to the Easter Egg Hunt at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at the football field. Cost is 35 cents each with two groups included — preschool through six years and seven through 11. See you there!

50 YEARS AGO

MARCH 26, 1953

Burns High School basketball team won the state championship BB basketball tournament at Hutchinson Saturday night defeating Simpson in final game, 60 to 56, in an overtime game. Ron Kirkpatrick and Don Nightengale of Burns were named to the all-tournament team.

The Chamber of Commerce voted to recommend that Florence stores be closed from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, April 3, for the Good Friday services.

75 YEARS AGO

MARCH 22, 1928

R.L. Jones of Emporia reported that Highway 50 South was hard surfaced entirely across Lyon County and that in Chase County a contract had been let for grading and bridges between Bader and the west county line. John Snelling, Marion County Commissioner, reports that 50 South is now sanded and will soon be completed across the county. John Nicholson reported that 50 South through Harvey County would be an all-weather road by the end of the year.

Sunday evening saw the second religious service conducted by the Rev. Cole in the Mayflower Theatre which, according to all indications, will continue indefinitely. The first Sunday evening service was attended by 217 and last Sunday evening there were more than 250 who came to the theatre for the Sunday evening service.

MARCH 26, 1897

The following will perhaps be some consolation to the Hutchinson man whose slumbers are continually disturbed by his wife's snoring. It has long been discovered that snoring is positive evidence that those doing it are generous, charitable, kind, and possess all the nobler impulses. A person who breathes easy and quietly while asleep is tricky, treacherous, and has a shriveled soul.

The electric light plant at Holton blew up on the night of March 16 and the manager was seriously injured. All the plugs blew out of the boiler and the damage to the machinery will cause a week's shutdown.
