Writer questions class

To the Editor:

Recently Sergeant Bruce Burke with the Peabody Police Department attended the 11th annual death investigation conference in Fairview Heights, Ill.

My question is this:

Why did the city send this officer to Illinois to take this training when there should have been something a bit closer? Why not just fly him to Dallas for this? Can the city budget handle these out-of-state meetings?

To me, 17 hours is not enough to justify such an expense. When I was in law enforcement, we were told that all meetings, especially ones that were given for credit for the annual required KLETC certification hours, were to be as local as possible. And I was in a larger community than Peabody!
