Woman regrets comment
To the Editor:
"Open mouth, insert foot" is a phrase I've told myself many times, but today was the worst. I walked down to Food Mart to get a soda and was talking with the clerk when a soldier walked in.
I wanted to tell him thank you for being part of the many who help provide us with our freedom. I was looking for an open line of communication.
When I noticed he was buying cigarettes I jokingly said, "You know those things will kill you." As soon as it was out of my mouth, I instantly regretted it.
My comment was followed by silence, and I hoped he hadn't heard me, but when he said, "Yeah, and bullets will kill you, too," I felt horrible. I then found out he had been home on leave and was returning overseas today. Figuring I'd embarrassed myself enough for one day, I told him to stay safe and walked home.
Thus, this note was "born."
To the soldier who probably thinks I'm a big jerk, please know I have the utmost respect for you and what you do.
Thank you and God Bless you and your fellow soldiers — past and present.
